The dog park is just a mile up the road, and it is the nicest one we have been to. Gus got a chance to run around a bit, even though the two dogs there were three or four times his size. He's actually too big for the small dog pen.
The story began with a 5-week journey in a 1997 RV, from Richmond, Va to Utah and back, July 23 through August 27, 2011. The next step included the sale of that RV and the purchase of a larger, classier RV we call Princess. And so our adventures continue.

Another Beautiful Day in Florida City
Every day we have a visitor near or in our site, a peacock...he/she has not displayed its tail feathers, but it struts around like it owns the place.

Biscayne National Park + Dog Park
It is about a 25 minute drive to the waterfront at the National Park Headquarters of Biscayne National Park, simply by heading east from the RV Park on Palm Avenue. We passed a dog park about a mile from the RV Park, so Gus will have a place to run "free" while we are here. While at the National park Headquarters, we learned about hurricane devastation many years ago that made thousands of people homeless. You would never know it from appearances now.

A Day At The Zoo
Zoo Miami is about 30 minutes from where we are staying. Today was a good day to visit...not too hot and definitely not crowded. It is much more spread out than the Richmond Zoo, so we should have rented a peddle cart (2 seater, 4 wheel bicycle), but we didnt. Half way through, Jim's back and hip were hurting enough for him to sit out the rest of the "tour", so I left him at a table in the shade and ventured out on my own. It was fun seeing all the animals, some of them even posing for the camera. When I was done, I found Jim and we headed to the car where he had cool drinks in a cooler.

Moving Day - To Florida City
We headed 26 miles back to the mainland and our "home" for the next week. Southern Comfort RV Resort is located just a half mile east of Route 1 in Florida City. There are a lot of sites here, but we are lucky to have a pull-through site at the very end of a row. There is a pool on site as well as a Tiki bar, and a recreation hall with daily activities. Most of the people here stay for months at a time. I think a week will be enough for us.

Kayaking at Pennekamp
Today was a beautiful day for Kayaking. The winds were calm and the temperature was about 74 degrees. We went out with Neil and Kat, Neil taking the lead as we navigated through some narrow waters among the mangroves. We saw an osprey eating up in the trees, and some fish in the water but no other wildlife. It was still a fun and relaxing time out on the water, but after 2 hours on the water we were ready to come in, get some rest. We'll all head out to dinner at Hobo's tonight.

John Pennekamp State Park
Sunday we left Bahia Honda and drove to Key Largo and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park for 6 days. We are in site 9; Neil and Kat are down the way in site 15. After settling in, I did some laundry in the expensive and new machines...$6 to wash and dry one load of wash. I finished drying some things in the RV to cut back on cost. While I did that, Jim first tried to get the satellite Dish to work, and failing that went down to watch football with Neil. After KC beat the Titans, we both went down to their site to play some Mexican Train and watch Green Bay get their butts kicked in the second playoff game. It is always fun to play Mexican Train with Kat and Neil.

Drive to Key West
Today was a beautiful day to take a drive down to Key West, exploring the Keys in between as we went. Gus rode along with us, and we all had fun walking along the boardwalk on the shores of Key West. Jim and I have been to Key West several times over the years, and while it was a busy place today, we have seen it much busier in the past. We drove past the Southernmost Point, but didn't stop for a photo with Gus because there was a long line there. We also drove past the Southernmost Hotel where Rob and Jessica got married almost 6 years ago.

Gone Fishing
Yesterday and today, Jim has had the opportunity to go fishing with Rick for the 1st half of the day. Yesterday they fished in the Gulf near the bridge and were successful in catching some red Snapper as well as other fish that got tossed back. Today they are out in the Atlantic deep sea fishing.
The weary fishermen returned with achy bodies and no fish. The seas were rough and the winds added to it. Maybe they'll have better luck next time.

Catching up
The past few days have been uneventful, but there is nothing wrong with that. The weather has been great although it has been a bit windy. The wind keeps the biting bugs away. The high temperatures have been 80-82, and the overnight lows have been in the 70s. Bahia Honda is a great place to get in some walking, so I have managed to put in at least 3 miles a day, and often 5 miles. This morning I walked out to where the primitive camping is...no electric and no showers there. There is water and toilets available. There are also great views. No vehicle higher than 6.5 feet can access the area which also includes 6 cabins ( they have their own bathrooms with showers).
