A Day in Downtown Charleston

Saturday we spent the afternoon walking in the market square among the many vendors selling their wares. There were a few musicians playing & singing in the streets and the occasional human statue.  We topped it off with a visit to the dessert bar where we had drinks and cake.  Later we drove out to Foley Beach to see the lighthouse and watch a bridal couple get their pictures taken on the beach.  On the way back to camp we stopped at a seafood market to buy 2 lbs of shrimp for dinner.  In the evening we enjoyed shrimp and a game of Mexican Train.

Yesterday Neil & Kat headed home while Jim and I spent time with Gus at the dog park and then relaxing for a few hours before driving up to Neil & Kat's for a delicious steak dinner and a dip in their new hot tub.

Today we are headed home to Midlothian.  It will be a long drive but we will take our time.  We are still waiting to hear news on Jill Anderson who is now in hospice care. Our hearts ache for Denny & Sharon, who are helpless to do anything except watch their daughter die.  As tough as it was for us to lose our own daughter 17 years ago, at least we didn't have to watch her die after being put on life support.  There will be a memorial service sometime in the near future for Jill, and we will drive down to Savannah for that.

Dog Park Time

Gus loves this dog park.  Wish we had one like this at home.  We visited the dog park every day we were here.  Gus even got in the water on his own, which we like to see.

Charleston, SC Friday, March 2

We are staying at James Island County Park, just 20 minutes from downtown Charleston.   We are joined here by Neil & Kat Lambert for a few days.

Today we visited Patriots Point and took a tour of the Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that was in service through two wars, WWII to the Vietnam War.  The guys also toured the submarine nearby, while Kat and I sat on a bench enjoying the scenery.

Leaving Hanna Park

Today we left Hanna Park in Jacksonville and are headed to Charleston.   We had a good week at Hanna Park, meeting many interesting people, seeing a baby alligator resting on the reeds at the edge of the lake, along with several birds, and spending time on the beach. Gus is ok with the water, but doesn't like the waves at all.  We will probably go back to this campground in the coming years.

Monday, Feb 26

Monday we enjoyed spending the day with Rod & Lynn Wade. They stopped over in Jacksonville to see us before heading to Ocala and Clearwater.  We had lunch at a great little seafood shack just before the ferry, then took the ferry across the inlet to Talbot Island.  From there we visited Kingsley Plantation, including the plantation house and the slave house remains.  As we were finishing up our walking tour, the rains came, so we headed back to camp.  Later we went over to their hotel for pizza, salad, beer, and VT basketball.  VT beat Duke by 1 point....yah!!!   Wades left early the next morning.
