Fort Desoto is located just south of St. Petersburg, FL. It is actually an island, connected to the mainland by a causeway with a drawbridge. They are building a new bridge to replace the drawbridge since that is part of the Intracoastal Waterway. The Campground has almost 200 campsites, but only one of 3 sections allows pets, specifically dogs. We were not as fortunate this year in getting a waterfront site. Instead we have a view of the playground, which thankfully is quiet after 6:30 or 7 pm. The roads through the Campground are a mixture of stone, sand, and dirt, but they make an effort to wet it down to keep it less dusty. The weather sometimes helps; we got a light shower in the early hours this morning and are forecasting more showers tonight. We arrived Monday afternoon, and checked out the dog beach and dog park Tuesday with Gus. He did get in the water a little bit with another dog. Yesterday Jim and I took a bike ride down to the East Beach to watch the wind surfers for a while.
I think this is one of my favorite parks. We are close to stores and museums and plenty of restaurants if we wish to adventure out. There are plenty of bike paths to all of the beaches and the fort in the park, and lots of places to walk Gus. The only thing that would make it better is to get a waterfront site...maybe next year.
