This morning Jim and I took a drive down to the visitor's center, then on to the Navajo Tribal Park Visitor Center. There is a museum there but sadly it was closed to visitors. We had hoped to spend some time there. The first visitors center had some of the history of the area but the one in the Tribal Park Museum is fantastic if memory serves me correctly. We were there 4 years ago. The views around the Tribal visitors center are still wonderful. Jim and I will take a guided tour of the Tribal lands first thing in the morning while it is still cool out. Paul and Mary passed on the opportunity. We do not expect to be back here so we want to take advantage of our visit this time.
After leaving the Tribal Park we drove toward Mexican Hat and Gooseneck State Park. Gooseneck is a very small state park but it has some great views of the longest entrenched meandering San Juan River. You can see some of the many twists and turns of the river from the Rim of the state park.
On this drive we also got great views of the rock formation called Mexican Hat just a short distance north of the town Mexican Hat.
The town of Mexican Hat is not much of a town but there is a hotel built into the cliff along the edge of the San Juan River, and there is a 7-11 gas station where Paul bought beer yesterday. He found out that you can't buy any alcohol on the Indian Reservation which includes where we are staying, and Mexican Hat is the closest town outside the Territory.
