Day 37 - Mesa Verde National Park

Today all 4 of us ventured into Mesa Verde National Park. Mary and Paul had tour tickets for Long House Cliff Dwelling at 2 pm so they headed into the park a little earlier than us so they could see some of the park before their tour. We left soon after to see some of the sites we missed on our last visit in 2017. Our first big stop today was Park Point Overlook, the highest point in the park at 8572 ft elevation.

From there we drove to the Far View Lodge, a much simpler structure than the lodges at Yellowstone and elsewhere. Next it was on to the Far View Sites, where there are ancient Pueblo Ruins. These were amazing buildings with 40 or more rooms. While much of the original buildings are gone, enough was unearthed to give a clear picture of how the lived in the 10th-12th centuries.

We also walked to a few overlooks where we could see cliff dwellings on the other side of the canyon, including Cliff House that we toured 4 years ago. That section of the park is closed for restoration this year.

Everyone was tired after lots of walking in the sun and the heat, so we headed to Mancos Brewery for beer, wine, and pizza. It was a nice way to end the day.
