Annapolis Royal

The day started out with rain showers, but it had started to clear up by 11 am.  Of course Jim left the sunroof open overnight so the seats were a bit wet as we headed out....thankfully nothing a good towel couldn't handle.  We drove into the town of Annapolis Royal, parked the car and began to walk around, even venturing into a few shops. The tide was going out but still somewhat high in our early photos.  Low tide occurred about 4 PM so our later photos show that.

After checking out the town, we visited Fort Anne on the edge of the shopping area.  There is a lot of history there regarding the British, the Mi'kmaq Indians, and the French battling for land here. The fort actually changed hands 7 times during the 17th and 18th centuries. The first settlement by Europeans was in 1629 when a group of about Scottish people settled here for almost 3 years, finally returning to their homeland when France acquired the land through a treaty.  The French later built the fort here (1702) in the shape of a star as were other forts at that time. Eventually the British gained control for the last time in the mid 1800s.
