The fortress is a reconstruction of the original fortress that existed on the same site in the early to mid 1700s. It is representative of the conflict between the British and the French over the Colonies.
The Canadian government along with the help of a lot of out of work miners reconstructed about 25% of the original complex, using historical documents and the same building materials and methods used back in the 1700s. We spent more than 3 hours exploring the complex and talking with folks in period costume who were very knowledgeable about the period in history and its people.
The costumed guides gave us insight into the lives of the residents of this enclave, in both English and French.
The armoire below is one of the few original pieces from the
fortress. The other furniture pieces are replicas or original to the time period but not original to the fortress.

How's this for a secret door below? Do you think the stairs give it away?
I had to take a picture of this unusual bus. The people traveling in it use the bus as their sleeping quarters as well. Each window in the back section represents a bunk.
This beautiful chapel is right in the fortress, between the officers quarters and the soldiers quarters.
