The day started with the guys going to the stores looking for a new regulator for the propane tank in the RV. It wasn't working last night and we had to improvise for dinner but we managed. They came back with a regulator but it didn't fit so back to the drawing board. We loaded the cooler with drinks and headed out toward White Sands National Par with a stop at Lowes on the way for a regulator that would work...fingers crossed.
The drive to White Sands was a long one, about 95 miles each way, but worth it. Thanks to Mike driving, Jim got a break from driving. The park is unique with mounds and mounds of very fine white sand. Where it remained undisturbed it was pristine. At the visitor's center we learned that the sand runs very deep, so it's not just on the surface.
There are 275 acres of gypsum sand in the park. There is water under the sand, even as dry as it seems on the surface. We saw kids sledding down some of the dunes, and drove over sand covered roads on our journey through the park.
As we left White Sands behind, Mike asked if there were any pistachio farms around that offered tours. We found one about 20 miles up the road so we headed there to check it out.
McGinn's PistachioLand boasts the world's largest Pistachio. It is not a real pistachio of course. The tours were sold out for the day but we enjoyed sampling lots of flavored pistachios, and bought some to bring home.
Next we stopped to take a picture of another Roadrunner statue, not quite as "pretty" as the one seen a few days ago.
